At the event, Alfa Romeo’s head of trackside engineering, Xevi Pujolar, will explain the benefits Alfa Romeo has gained from the improved surface.
Alfa Romeo has speed but needs points
Alfa Romeo has only scored once in the past 10 Grands Prix, but the team believes the improved surface has pushed them to favor the race system.
Both teams’ cars were on pace to join 10th on the new floor, but checks for Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu’s 18th place meant the team failed to score and were now just points ahead of Aston Martin.
“It’s the step we’ve been waiting for, another small step in the right direction,” said Xavi Pujolar, Head of Trackside Engineering.
“That put us closer to the top of the midfield. In the Q3 stage we had both cars and then the lap was canceled because there was too little track restriction at turn 12 and it was enough to cancel the lap time.
We only had one session, we made sure that everything was working as expected because FP2 was Pirelli’s test, and we were able to see that everything was working as expected. [upgrade]He said.
Bottas’ race-ending spin was marked by a wind flare, and Zhou moved up to 11th.
“It’s a bit disappointing because the performance was on the upswing this weekend. We had both cars yesterday in Q3,” added Pujolar.
But still this track is passable and things can happen during the race. So we were very good with both cars fighting for points. It didn’t turn out the way we expected.”
Alfa Romeo admitted that it “struggled a lot” with tire management, but said: “We have a good package now and we have to be positive because both drivers are in good shape.”
