Alpine have become the fourth Formula 1 team to announce plans to launch their 2023 car. They will present the new A523 on February 16.
The graduation will take place in London. It will be the Alpine’s third F1 car after the Renault team’s name change ahead of the 2021 season, carrying its sister sports car name.
The French-owned British-based team finished fourth last year, although it will not be able to repeat its victory in 2021. But they scored in 19 of the 22 races and both cars finished in the points on 11 occasions.
Ocon will be joined this season by Pierre Gasly, who will join the team with AlphaTauri after Fernando Alonso left for Aston Martin.
There have been many changes since the team became Alpine, but there will be continuity in Alpine management. Ottmar Saazfnauer will continue as team principal and is now one of F1’s longest-tenured, although he will take up the role in February 2022, with Pat Fry as chief technical officer and Matt Harman as technical director.
The team has yet to announce who their backup driver will be. Oscar Piastieri is expected to continue in his starting role before being offered a running back in Alonso’s place. But he turned down that seat and moved to McLaren, where he will now make his F1 debut.
Instead, Piastre’s fellow Australian Jack Doohan is the frontrunner to become the Alpine reserve. The Formula 2 racer has been tested with the team and featured in F1 practice sessions and is part of the Alpine Academy.
