“Eddie Hearn is stopping everything,” said veteran promoter Bob Arum. talkSPORTArum, who promotes Tyson Fury – along with Britain’s Frank Warren – as he “doesn’t want the fight to happen” says recent talks for a heavyweight mega-fight between Team Fury and Team Joshua are falling short because Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn feels he has nothing to do with the planned December bout. “And why doesn’t he want the fight to happen?” Arum rhetorically asks, “Because Joshua has lost three of his five fights and he thinks he’s going to lose again if he fights Tyson Fury and so Eddie is really getting in the way.
Although no one but the participants really knew what was going on behind closed doors, there was no denying that Joshua was in a career slump. Although still a huge favourite, the towering Londoner recently lost his second fight in a row to WBO, WBA and IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. Another loss, to Englishman Fury no less, would seriously damage the former multi-titleist’s career. “I don’t know of any issues,” Arum continued. “After he sent a draft, Frank and George (Warren, Frank’s son) replied and then we didn’t hear from Eddie for days. He will stand until he dies of his own accord.”
Whoever it is, it’s clear at this point that the December 3rd fight between Fury and Joshua is in danger of falling apart. What’s particularly interesting, or eclipsing depending on one’s perspective, is that the fighters themselves seem genuinely interested in sharing the ring. “I don’t think Joshua is part of that,” says Arum. talkSPORT. I think if Joshua wanted the fight to happen for any reason, I know Tyson Fury would help him.
To be sure, there were always whispers that the whole affair was too good to be true. Wrath suddenly offered Joshua a 60/40 split due in 2022. Hearn acknowledged the offer was legitimate, but noted there was still the usual mountain of details to sift through. As time went on, that mountain began to seem timeless. And Arum thinks that’s what Hear wants. “There are no problems,” Arum said. I could see if there were some issues but no problems.
