Carmelo Anthony hasn’t found a home for his 20th season in the NBA, but he’s at peace with it.
The 38-year-old has recently prioritized the arrival of his son Kian, who has emerged as an elite high school recruiting prospect. Melo attended the game against Sierra Canyon, coached by LeBron James’ sons, Bron and Bryce James, and spoke to ESPN about whether he will continue to chase his first championship.
“I want to be. You know, I love the game, but I understand that there’s a lot of things that are out of my control,” Anthony said. “Train him, be there for me, come to the game. Those are things that I haven’t had the chance to do in a long time, so now I can be that father. And the person that I need to be.”
As the third overall pick of the legendary 2003 NBA draft, Anthony had a decorated career. As a ten-time All-Star, Melo averaged 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists. His best score was ninth with 28,289 points. He’s accomplished it all, but adding a title to his coveted legacy is one of the few things he hasn’t conquered.
“I’m a cool guy. I enjoy playing,” Anthony said. “I’m in the gym every day. He’ll give himself a chance when he gets the chance, but it’s not something I worry about.
Teams around the league may not be interested in the 38-year-old forward, but Anthony sure has plenty left in the tank to compete at the highest level. For now, the future Hall of Famer will focus on how his son gets to the professional game.
