Carragher Claims Tottenham Must Back Conte With Two Signings As One Star ‘Not Good Enough’

Jamie Carragher has pushed Tottenham Hotspur to back Antonio Conte in the transfer market as their current squad is not good enough.

Spurs have come under fire recently as their form has dipped somewhat.

They have suffered two consecutive defeats in the Premier League but they still sit third in the table.

In the Champions League meanwhile, they may need to beat Marseille in their final game to secure top spot ahead of Sporting Lisbon and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Conte has done a superb job at Tottenham as he secured them Champions League against all odds.

If they qualify again this season, it would be a mighty achievement given the competition they are up against.

Spurs edged out Arsenal last season but their rivals have enjoyed a sensational start to the 2022/23 campaign.

Carragher thinks Arsenal’s success has become a “major problem” for Conte.

“Antonio Conte has a major problem at Tottenham Hotspur. It is called Arsenal,” Carragher wrote for The Telegraph.

“One team in North London is generating headlines for playing with a youthful, energetic swagger. The other is seen as more pragmatic and counterattacking.

“Neither side is “right” or “better” in their approach – it remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta or Conte win more trophies at the end of their respective reigns – but Tottenham supporters are looking at their rivals and craving similar edge-of-the-seat football.”

The Liverpool legend has also argued that Conte needs to be backed with at least two more signings if Tottenham are going to enable him to “meet his objectives”.

Carragher thinks a new goalkeeper is required as Hugo Lloris is no longer “good enough”, and they also need “another centre-half”.

“Despite his experience and medal haul, Lloris is not good enough to take Spurs to the next level and win the big trophies,” Carragher continued.

“He is a World Cup-winner but he makes too many errors and is not the same level as the best around. It is a position where I feel Spurs have been lacking for a while.

“Add the need for another centre-half – Clement Lenglet’s performance against Newcastle was poor – and Conte’s argument that he needs a few more transfer windows to assemble the squad to meet his objectives is correct.

“What you can be sure of is that, if there is any hint of Spurs getting fatigued by Conte, he will not be short of offers to move on. He does not have a history of hanging around.

“It would be a shame if this relationship does not last. Given that his contract only runs until the end of the season, it requires a leap of faith to believe he will be around long enough to keep building, especially if his vision does not match those who are paying their hard-earned cash to watch every week.

“For Spurs to have Conte is a coup and while I respect and understand fans’ frustrations, their coach deserves more patience.

He added: “Arteta is in the process of proving himself capable of being a Premier League winner. Conte already is one with nothing to prove.”
