Jamie Carragher took issue with two incidents involving Andrew Robertson in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds, but at least he wasn’t the ‘ghost’.
Liverpool fell to their fourth league defeat, and their first at home for 19 months, at Anfield on Saturday, with Crysencio Summerville scoring a late winner for Jesse Marsch’s side.
Joe Gomez gifted Rodrigo the opener and the Liverpool defending in general was ropey at best.
One member of Liverpool’s back four who has managed to avoid criticism in the most part this season is Robertson, but Carragher was critical of the full-back over two incidents.
Just before half-time Robertson was involved in a scuffle with Brenden Aaronson, before the Reds left-back kicked the ball into the American’s stomach when he was on the ground.
“Robertson shouldn’t have done that, he kicked the ball at the player on the floor,” Carragher said on commentary duty for Sky Sports. “He knows what he’s doing.”
The second moment was “absolutely stupid” according to Carragher, as Robertson left his foot in on Illan Meslier right at the end of the game, allowing the Leeds goalkeeper the opportunity to stay down and waste time.
“It’s absolutely stupid from Andy Robertson. He leaves his foot in which could cause him a problem himself,” Carragher said.
“But the goalkeeper’s got to go down and that clock’s ticking away. He’s never going to get there.
“Just that trailing right foot. Just seems to hand his right foot there a little bit longer than maybe he should.
“It’s a daft thing to do because this is what you’re going to get now. Liverpool need the ball back in play as soon as possible. He was never going to get that ball.”
But Robertson wasn’t the Liverpool “ghost”, with Carragher reserving that label for midfielder Fabinho.
“Fantastic from Leeds, going right through Liverpool’s midfield like they weren’t there,” Carragher said in the first half. “Fabinho was like a ghost, he went past him that easily.”
