NAPLES, Fla. – Charlie Hoffman and Ryan Palmer combined for 10-under 62 on Saturday with 10 birdies, setting the 36-hole record at the QBE Shootout and taking a 2-shot lead into the final day.
For the first time as teammates, Hoffman and Palmer were 26-under 118. That broke the record previously shared by Harris English and Matt Kuchar in 2020 and Jason Day and Cameron Tringale in 2014.
Hoffman and Palmer lead by 2 shots over Tom Hoge and Sahit Tegala, both playing the unofficial event for the first time. They combined for 60 at Tiboron Golf Club.
In a modified alternate shot, both players hit tee shots and then alternate shots the rest of the way. The last round will be four balls.
English and Kuchar, three-time winners of the QBE Shootout, shot 62 and tied 61, four shots behind Day and Billy Horschel.
The two LPGA players in the field were 9 shots back. Nellie Korda and Denny McCarthy tied for 67 with Lexi Thompson and Maverick McNeely. Korda and McCarthy double bogeyed No. 11 and finished their final six holes at 7-under par.
Six of the 12 teams had a 65 or lower in the modified swing.
“We were in a really good rhythm, giving ourselves birdie opportunities and knocking most of them down,” Hoffman said. “The reality is we were just doing our thing. Obviously we saw low results, but that means the birds are there and we tried to attack them and we did a good job.”
