Formula 1 has claimed Max Verstappen’s second World Championship win in confusing circumstances following today’s Japanese Grand Prix.
The driver has cast doubt on his claim to winning the world championship after taking victory in today’s Japanese Grand Prix. The race was only about 28 of the planned 53 laps – 52% of the planned distance.
F1 has introduced new rules for 2022 which state that reduced points will be awarded if less than 75% of the race distance is completed. However, the FIA has confirmed that it will award full points to the race.
A spokesperson for the FIA told RaceFans in a statement that “the rules regarding the allocation of reduced points (Article 6.5) only apply when race bans continue.” “So full points are awarded and Max Verstappen is the world champion.”
Verstappen won the championship once rival Charles Leclerc was handed a five-second penalty for leaving the track on the final lap, dropping him to third.
