Erik ten Hag has told Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford that he must “make a decision” about his future amid reports linking him with PSG.
Rashford was linked with a move to PSG in the summer after he struggled during the 2021/22 campaign.
The forward underwent shoulder surgery last year and he looked short of confidence after he returned.
The Englishman held talks with PSG but he ended up staying at Man Utd.
This has proven to be a wise decision as Rashford has been back to his best in a United shirt under Ten Hag.
The 25-year-old is playing with a smile on his face once again and United are reaping the rewards of that. His eight goals and three assists in 18 appearances earned him a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.
His contract is up in 2023 but Man Utd do have the option to automatically extend his deal by a further year.
Ten Hag has now confirmed that they do intend to activate this clause before they look to tie Rashford down to a more long-term contract.
“He [Marcus] has to make a decision,” Ten Hag told reporters (via United’s official website).
“The only thing we can do is show him this is the best club to be in, which has to do with the culture of the club and also in the way we are working, in the way we play and the way we train and if we are offering the right environment to progress.
“It’s a financial issue as well. Then it is up to him to make the decision. But for one-and-a-half years, he will be here.”
Ten Hag has also likened Rashford to PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe as the Englishman has “huge potential”.
“From the first moment, I recognised his huge potential,” Ten Hag added.
“And now to get out the potential, I believe when Marcus’ positioning is on the back of the defending line, there is almost no better player in the world.
“There is [Kylian] Mbappe at this moment, a type like him, but when he [Marcus] is getting in that position, he’s great and you see he’s really improved also out of possession.”
CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has now reported via Twitter that PSG are “still really interested” in Rashford.
But the French giants “felt they were used as leverage” in the summer. They opted against being “more aggressive” due to the “agent games being played”.
Jacobs adds that PSG never felt that the transfer was “progressing or realistic”.
They “do still intend to continue talks” as Rashford remains a player they “would love” to add to their squad.
