It’s good to be Keith Thurman. Although there is no denying that the man is incredibly talented and has an impressive record of losing only once in the last ten years; Not much for the famous Manny Pacquiao, but the truth is that the fighter known as “The One Time” has not. Especially as a late riser. Thurman has fought a total of five times in the last six and a half years. In fact, the man is almost a part-time fighter these days. However, ESPN reports that he is set to fight Errol Spence, one of the most popular fighters on earth, in April, the same month Gervonta Davis is expected to make a highly anticipated superfight with Ryan Garcia.
And after all that, Thurman and Spence had a good time saying they didn’t want to fight the other. Oh, and Spence’s multiple welterweight titles won’t be in jeopardy either. With all of that in mind, Spence-Thurman has a quality matchup, should he sign a contract for the fight (which someone hasn’t – at least not yet). Both men fought outside WBO champion Terence Crawford at Welterweight. Both men are also fun to watch – rarely, if ever, in a boring fight.
Suffice it to say, Spence can at least keep the WBA welterweight belt after the Thurman fight – if he wants to. Of note, if Spence decides to return to welterweight, he will have to fight WBO welterweight titlist Crawford if he wants to capture the WBA belt. That is if Spence decides he wants to return to welterweight. Maybe he’ll decide to stay at light middleweight at that point. It’s not always easy or worthwhile for some fighters to continue trying to make weight in certain classes. There is no word yet on whether Spence, whose WBC and IBF welterweight belts are in his possession, will have nothing to offer against Thurman if he moves up in weight. No doubt fans will find out soon enough.
