Eupen hosts Standard Liege in round 24 of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. The match will be played on Wednesday, January 26th at Kehrwegstadion (Eupen)
Exactly ten years ago, Eupen was acquired by the Aspire Zone Foundation, the same Qatari project that owns Paris Saint-Germain. It was clear that this Belgian club was not regarded as a serious asset and a leading investment. Moreover, initially everything was presented as the launch of a platform for training young players, mainly from African and Asian countries. But Eupen was only able to gain promotion to the top division of the country. The Pandas ended the last championship in 12th place. In the new season, there were several good streaks of three consecutive victories. That is why Eupen is quite far from the danger zone at the moment. But the latest results cannot be called successful: four defeats in a row and a 1-1 draw against Kortrijk in the last round.

In 2018, Standard Liege won another national cup in combination with the vice-championship. However, then the Reds won only bronze medals, and in recent years, the ambitious team has finished outside the quartet of leaders. And now there is even a threat to get involved in the struggle for survival. Of course, it is rather a theoretical danger. But the last calendar year ended with four defeats in five rounds of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, combined with the relegation from the cup. Against this background, a draw against Anderlecht after a pause can already be considered certain progress. And in the last round, Standard Liege tied against Club Brugge KV at home (2-2).
In total, Eupen and Standard Liege played 15 head-to-head matches. Eupen won only a couple of them, and the last victory was back in 2018. All three matches that were played in 2021 brought victories to the Reds, including in November, when everything was decided by an own goal. Both teams are quite unstable at the moment, but they have shown good results after a short vacation. And now they will try to gain at least a draw. In our opinion, the upcoming game will please the fans of productive football.
