Ferrari’s Beganovic wins FRMEC thriller as last-lap confusion costs Mini
Ferrari Academy driver Dino Beganovic won the opening round of the Formula One Middle East Championship in Dubai yesterday, with confusion at the end of the race seemingly giving Gabrielle Mini a chance to win.
Beganovic was locked in a perfect lap with the Hitech driver Mini, as time expired, TV graphics incorrectly showed the race was on its final lap. As the pair battled at the end of the lap, Mini tried to squeeze Beganovic against the pit wall on his run to the line, only to be shown the boards by both drivers with one more lap to go.
Mini pulled back as Beganovic took the lead and took the final lap to take the win. Matias Zagazzetta finished second and Taylor Barnard third after starting 27th on the grid. Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli was fourth, with Mini dropping to sixth late in the race.
Verstappen starts fourth in Virtual Le Mans
Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen will start the fourth edition of the Virtual Le Mans 24 Hours today after Team Redline’s number one team failed to secure pole position in Hyperpole.
Verstappen’s car – shared with teammates Luc Browning, Jeffrey Rietveld and Diogo Pinto – was four-tenths of a second slower than the winning No. 20 Porsche Coanda of Lorin Heinrich, Ayhankan Guven, Joshua Rodgers and Michel DeJong Paul. Team Redline’s teammates number two in third place.
The 24-hour endurance race on the rFactor 2 platform starts today at 1am GMT.
Ugochukwu F4 starts the season with a win
McLaren junior driver Ugo Ugochuchu started the season with a win in the UAE F4 series in Dubai.
Ugochuchu switched positions and beat Valerio Rinicella by two seconds, while James Wharton completed the podium in third. In his debut car race, Ferrari Academy driver Tukka Taponen set the fastest lap to finish ninth after starting third on the grid.
