Formula E champion Stoffel Vandoorne will join the Aston Martin F1 team next year as a test and reserve driver.
Before the team left the series, Vandoorne won this year’s Formula E world championship with Mercedes, and will defend his title with DS Penske. He shares Aston Martin reserve duties with Formula 2 champion Felipe Dragovic.
The 30-year-old scored a point on his F1 debut at the 2016 Bahrain Grand Prix and was replaced by McLaren’s Fernando Alonso. In the year He drove full-time in the team with Alonso before stepping down at the end of 2018. Since then he has served as a reserve driver for Mercedes, competing successfully for the team in FE.
He described his move to the Silverstone-based Aston Martin team as “incredibly exciting”.
“I have watched with great interest how the team has developed and expanded, and I know how incredibly committed they are to making progress in all areas.”
Vandoorne joins former team-mate Alonso as he moves to the Aston Martin line-up for 2023 alongside Lance Stroll. “It’s great to join Fernando and Lance, who I know from my Formula 1 racing career, and help them improve next year’s car,” said Vandoorne.
“He has all the skills we need for this new and expanded role in the team: he is fast, analytical, hard-working and a great team player, and he will fit in perfectly with our growing organisation, working alongside our other test driver Felipe Dragovic,” said Aston Martin Team Principal Mike Krak van Doorn.
