Devin Haney traveled to Australia last June to dethrone countryman George Kambossos for the lightweight titles. Honey’s ability to do it in one-sided fashion has left people wondering why the flamboyant American might be headed to Australia to face Kambossos again in a few months. Requirements are requirements, and so Cambossos had to return to Cambossos’ homeland to face him again. Hani was the clear favorite in Saturday’s rematch, but Cambosos shocked the world when he defeated Teofimo Lopez in 2021. Many doubted he could shock the world again, but boxing can be a sport full of surprises. Hani-Kambossos 2 was scheduled for 12 rounds.
Kambossos started off strong first. Indeed, at the end of the chapter, he was able to land well against the defending champion. Hani was able to land well on his own within seconds. That being said, Kambossos looks sharper than he did in the first fight between the two men. However, in the third, Hani began to shoot quickly and accurately. The fourth saw Honey recruit the range, physical, and pot the man. Moving forward behind the jab in the fifth, Hani looked for opportunities to land power shots.
In the sixth, things fell into a similar pattern, with Honey Jab popping up as Kambosos tried to get inside. Needless to say, Honey now had a sharp edge. Cambossos was brought back to man in the seventh. Meanwhile, Honey rested strong and eager. Kambossos, however, was able to swing Haney in the eighth. It was a ninth round battle, each man landing hard.
Hani eliminated a bloodied Kambosos in the tenth round. In fact, the game looks set to hit the Aussie mat. But he survived the round and went well on the eleventh Heaney. Cambossos was very aggressive in the twelfth, but it was too little too late. Suffice it to say, Honey retained the titles, courtesy of an undisputed decision from the judges.
