Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson will not sign the next contract extension. In July 2019, the Washington State product signed a five-year, $190 million contract with the team.
The current deal expires at the end of the 2023-24 season. If Warriors GM Bob Myers does not offer Thompson a new deal, he will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024. The five-time All-Star will earn $40,600,080 for the 2022-23 season.
According to some NBA betting sites, the Warriors are favored to repeat in 2023. However, a few sportsbooks are currently giving the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers high championship odds.
In an interview with NBA.com’s Mike Medina, the Warriors point guard was asked whether or not he has discussed a new contract with the front office.
“I haven’t talked to the front office about it,” Thompson replied. “Every day I do what I can to get better. I will be the best player. I know what I can do.”
“I fully expect to get another NBA contract either this summer or next,” Thompson continued. I am completely confident in my abilities.
He wasn’t wrong as the Warriors wrapped up their fourth championship in eight years.
“Until then, I’m not worried about the extension because I know if I just do my job and be myself, it will happen.”
Warriors guard Klay Thompson is eyeing another NBA contract in the future, enjoying playing with Draymond Green.
During the 2021-22 season, the nine-year veteran averaged 20.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 32 starts. Thompson missed the first half of the season as he was still recovering from an ACL injury.
In the year On April 10, 2022, in the Whalers’ 128-107 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, the guard scored a game-high 41 points in 31 minutes of action. He finished 16 of 29 (55.2%) from the field and 7 of 14 (50%) from downtown.
Medina also mentioned that Draymond Green hit Jordan Poole during a team practice a few weeks ago. “It was sad,” Klay Thompson said. “Violence is not the answer to anything, especially between teammates.”
But we are moving past it. We talked to both players as a team to understand what needs to be done to fix that relationship.
“We know a win cures all, and ‘Ring Night’ will help ease the pain from a tough two weeks,” the Warriors guard explained.
“I love both guys. Draymond is my brother. We’ve been through everything together. JP is like my little brother. I want what’s best for them. I’m excited for JP’s extension. He got that.”
“To see where he’s come from his rookie season and now to be the future of the franchise is special. I know Draymond and I have a lot left in the tank, not only for this year, but for years to come.”
“We all love each other. Other than those two, we’re not pumpkins. We want them both to go where we want them to go. Of course, the Warriors haven’t offered Green a contract extension yet. He has a player option for the 2023-24 season.”
Additionally, in Game 1 of the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, Thompson passed LeBron James for second on the NBA’s all-time playoff 3-pointers list.
In Game 5, the guard joined LeBron and teammate Stephen Curry as the only players in league history to make at least 100 3-pointers in the NBA Finals.
