Coach Becky Hammon, a San Antonio Stars and New York Liberty legend, is one win away from leading the Las Vegas Aces to their first WNBA title. Hammon spent sixteen seasons playing in the WNBA and never reached the top of the mountain.
After retiring from her playing career, she joined the coaching staff of the San Antonio Spurs and the legendary Gregg Popovich. She spent five seasons in the Spurs system before deciding to retire from the NBA in December 2021, making her the highest-paid coach in WNBA history.
Hammon was rumored to be in the running for several open head coaching positions in the NBA before taking the job with the Aces. Had Hammon been hired, she would have been the first female coach in NBA history. In the year She led the 2015 Spurs Summer League team to the Summer League title as head coach.
In her first season as Aces head coach, Hammon won the 2022 Coach of the Year, Jackie Young won Most Improved Player, Aja Wilson won her second league MVP, and Kelsey Plum won All-Star MVP on her way to one. A career year, and the Aces are back in the Finals with a win.
“Does everyone in the NBA feel dumb for not hiring you?” USA Today’s Lindsay Schnell asked Hammon. She asked them if they thought.
“I’m used to people not choosing me. I don’t know if they know. I just do it.” Hammon, despite all her success.
Even with a 2-0 lead, Coach Hammon knows her work is not done and she has more work to do.
“I don’t see any banner. I didn’t see any bubbles. I’m sure happy as hell I’ll never see that confetti again because we haven’t won anything yet. Hamon said.
Game 3 of the WNBA Finals is scheduled for September 15 at 9:00 PM EST.
