It looks like Jake Paul has found his next opponent. With two opponents Tommy Fury and Hasim Rahman Jr failing to meet pre-fight requirements – such as making weight and being able to show up properly – after the August pay-per-view card was scrapped – Paul now seems to have an enemy. Who can answer the opening bell? Multiple outlets are now reporting that Paul is set to fight former UFC legend and pro boxer Anderson Silva on a pay-per-view card next month. If these reports prove to be true, the matchup will be very interesting.
Although he is now almost 40 to 50, Silva has proven to be very skilled in the boxing ring. This probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as the man briefly boxed professionally before focusing his energies on mixed martial arts. Moreover, Silva was nothing if not a fighter to be seen by the Prime Minister. The man known as “The Spider” delivers a jaw-dropping performance in the Octagon. There was indeed talk of Silva facing Roy Jones in the boxing ring years ago.
As for social media influencer boxer Paul, it has proven to be a bit of a surprise as he has shown that he takes boxing seriously. He trains hard, really wants to keep improving and has a right hand that can turn the lights out. Paul’s last fight saw him take out another former UFC great, Tyron Woodley. However, Paul has yet to face a real boxer in the ring. However, if Silva isn’t technically a professional boxer and doesn’t quite fit the legal description, he comes pretty close. Again, that boxing background, along with a few impressive victories, is in the ring.
What makes this matchup — if it’s more than just an internet rumor — more than a simple novelty bout is that each fighter will have something real at stake. Should Silva win, he would have successfully deflated Paul’s balloon, which has been flying really high lately. If Paul wins, however, it will have an even more dull mark on Silva’s otherwise impressive combat sports resume. Again, this will be important for both fighters. And that makes it interesting.
