There was excitement in the air Thursday when Caleb Plant announced he had signed on to face former middleweight contender David Benavidez. “I went and made it happen,” Plant tweeted. “Contract signed. See you next year.” ESPN’s Mike Coppinger took to Twitter and said: “A source told ESPN that Benavidez has signed a contract. The super-middleweight fight is expected to take place in January. What was missing, really, was confirmation from Benavidez himself. Thursday night, that confirmation came.
Benavidez on his Instagram page “it’s official” Benavidez vs plant! You can’t hide anymore. See you soon [sic]He said. Suffice it to say, this is great news for fight fans, especially at a time when boxing hasn’t been able to deliver the kind of big name matchups the fan base has been looking for. Benavidez and Plant are two of the best in the super middleweight division. Moreover, they don’t care much for each other. Throw in the fact that the plant is a stylist and Benavidez is a powerful slugger, and there’s good reason for fan excitement.
