Luka Doncic passed Wilt Chamberlain for the NBA record
Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks has been on a tear to start the season. Many expected him to be in the MVP race this season, but not many expected him to be this dominant. How dominant was Luke, you might ask? That Doncic passed the late and great Wilt Chamberlain for the second 30-point games to start an NBA season tells you enough.
His scoring this season is as follows: 36 points vs. Brooklyn, 35 vs. Toronto, 33 vs. Utah, 44 vs. Orlando, 31 vs. Oklahoma City, 41 vs. Brooklyn, 37 vs. New Orleans, 32 vs. Memphis, and finally 35 vs. Phoenix to start the year. Points.
He has a ways to go to match the record for consecutive 30-point games to start a season. Ironically, this record is held by Wilt Chamberlain. During the 1962-63 season, he played for 23 games. After the Mavericks’ win over the Jazz on Nov. 3, Luca had this to say about the NBA legend:
“I always listen to Wilt Chamberlain. He is always there. I wanted to play in the NBA. This is truly a dream come true for me. “
Luka Doncic’s numbers
It’s no secret that Luka Doncic has been exceptional this season. Whether he breaks the record or not, one cannot take away the MVP-like campaign he is currently having. So far this year, Doncic has averaged a league-high 36.0 points per game, and 8.8 rebounds per game to go along with 8.6 assists. He has an effective field goal percentage of 57.2 percent. It’s also worth noting that Luca is averaging nearly two steals per game (1.9 to be exact).
As if these numbers weren’t impressive enough, his advanced analytics also depended on his NBA peers. Luka Doncic currently has a league-best player efficiency rating of 36.7. He also averaged 62.9 percent and a league-high offensive win percentage of 1.7. Luca has a box plus/minus rating of 13.4, which is currently the best in the NBA.
Team success for Dallas
How has this personal success translated to the team so far? While the year is still very young, the Dallas Mavericks are ranked sixth in the Western Conference. They have a 5-3 winning record. Dallas has been on fire of late, winning its last four games. Their record will be better considering the next two games against the Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards. With Luka playing well, the Mavericks are in good hands going forward.
What’s most impressive about this latest play is how well Doncic performed without another star on the Mavericks. Christian Wood was a good frontcourt piece for the team to trade for this summer. However, the roster still needs to be closely watched come game time. Currently, Luka Doncic is solidifying himself as the frontrunner for MVP.
