In a bizarre turn of events, Man Utd and England defender Harry Maguire has been mocked by a Ghanaian MP during a recent parliamentary debate.
Isaac Adongo is an MP who is part of the National Democratic Congress party in Ghana.
The opposing New Patriotic Party are in power and they have this week released their 2023 budget.
Parliament met on Wednesday to discuss the issues that have been brought about by the budget.
With the World Cup ongoing, Adongo opted to reference Maguire when he tore into NPP member and vice-president, Mahamudu Bawumia.
Adongo started by giving a breakdown of Maguire’s decline in form over the past year or so for United.
“If you are a fan of football, and I was happy to see the jubilation when Ghana won, but there was a player in the United Kingdom, in England called Maguire who was playing for Manchester United,” Adongo told the Ghana parliament.
“Harry Maguire, he’s a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere. He was seen as the best defender in the world, Manchester United were at the bottom.
“He became the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence, tackling Manchester players and giving assists to opponents. Mr Speaker, when you see the opponents go to score, Maguire will score for them.”
Adongo later referred to the vice-president as an “economic Maguire” to highlight how the political figure has wronged the nation of Ghana.
“Mr Speaker, you remember in this country we also have an economic Maguire. This economic Maguire, we’re clapping saying this man is the best in managing foreign terms,” Adongo said.
“The same economic Maguire was at Central University delivering lectures on how to restore the value of the Cedi. Mr Speaker why we gave this Maguire the opportunity to be at the centre of our defence, he became the rest of our own goals.
“Why he thought he was the best in capital opportunity, he moved us to 40.4. Why at that time he was the best at managing the recession at nine per cent, he moved it to 54 per cent. Mr Speaker the biggest issue is now is that when we pay the appearance fee for this Maguire.”
This is not an article I expected to write today but it is amusing all the same.
While Maguire has had a torrid time at United, he has silenced some of his doubters in the early stages of the World Cup.
The defender rarely lets England down and he has been one of Gareth Southgate’s star performances as they breezed through the group stages to advance to the Round of 16 stage.
