After a meeting of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission on Friday, it was all but confirmed that MA online sports betting will not start in time for the 2023 Super Bowl.
In bad news for online operators, the Commission has set a deadline of 29Th January 2023 has been penciled in as the first date for a retail sportsbook launch in the state.
In August, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed legislation to legalize sports betting, joining several neighboring states in Massachusetts in legalizing betting on professional and college sports.
History shows that the road from law to live is never easy, and hopeful MA bettors are finding the same. Those who decide to place legal bets will continue to travel to states like Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Connecticut because all three states have legal and operating sportsbooks.
The move passed by the MA Gaming Commission allows retail sports betting to begin in late January, but online sports betting cannot begin until ‘early March’. What is not known is when ‘Category 2’, the racetracks, will be allowed to start sportsbook.
Will MA online sports betting be legal on the Super Bowl or March Madness?
Playing March Madness online has a lot of promise for online shooters. Super Bowl 2023 will be held on February 12Thnot until the end of the month when March Madness Online is set to launch.
The timetable was opposed by commissioner Nakisha Skinner, who labeled the start-up ‘difficult’ and feared it could have a detrimental impact on staff and the state.
Given that the Super Bowl and March Madness are comfortably, at least historically, the biggest betting events in the United States, MA, retail and online sports betting should not be given the green light to miss out on a large amount of revenue.
