Schumacher can return to F1 if we help him develop – Wolff
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes Mick Schumacher will get a “permanent seat” in Formula 1 if Mercedes help develop him as a reserve driver.
Schumacher competed with Haas in 2021 and 2022 but was rejected by the team this season. Mercedes signed him as their reserve driver to replace Nick de Vries, who took the race seat at the Alfa Romeo. Wolff says Schumacher has the potential to get a second chance racing in Formula 1.
“If we can give him a safe environment for further development, I believe he can be a good race driver in the future in a fixed seat,” Wolff said.
“In the same way we let Nick de Vries go to do his job, that could happen to Mick – we never let him go, either within our team or elsewhere. At this level. He’s been a big contributor, driving the new car for a year and being in Formula 1 for two years… in the simulator. And it will be extremely helpful in evaluating the car in general.
No date has been set for Frijns’ return.
ABT Formula E driver Robin Frigens is uncertain whether to return after suffering multiple fractures to his left arm and hand in a crash at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez on Saturday.
“I had five hours of surgery because my arm was broken in several places,” he wrote on social media. “I’ll be going home and recuperating soon. It’s too early to say when I’ll be back, but I’ll be back soon!”
The next tournament will be held in Diriyah District, Saudi Arabia on January 27.
