Red Bull’s Sergio Perez is concerned that the FIA’s plans to further reduce the maximum tire temperature in Formula 1 next year could compromise safety.

The heating blankets wrapped around the tires of Formula 1 cars that sit on the grid pre-race, as well as the temperature drop used to warm up the tires before pit stops, debuted this year. The previous top limit of 100C front tire and 80C rear has been lowered to 70C for both this season.

For 2023, another reduction will be written into the regulations, bringing the blankets to 50 cents. Safety concerns over F1 cars running on cold tires have halted previous attempts to ban blankets altogether, but F1 is considering doing so in 2024.

However, Perez said that it was very difficult to generate heat in the tires after the temperature dropped this year.

“For me, the only concern is overheating,” Perez said when asked about the difficulty of getting Pirelli’s 2022 tires into the right operating window for unlimited qualifying.

He is concerned about the prospect of a further drop in tire temperatures next year. “Sometimes when you’re behind the safety car, these low blankets are us running. [it’s more difficult]. I think they’re already trying to go down for next year, which I think puts the driver at risk because some conditions, some conditions can be very dangerous.

“[With] Cold track temperatures and safety cars and such can be a bit of a risk for some drivers. So I think that’s the only real concern I have with these tires at the moment.

Pirelli has started track testing with teams to develop its 2023 tyres. It has not yet started such development work for the rubber it will supply for 2024, which will have to work at high temperatures due to the lack of a thermal rubber blanket.

This year’s blanket temperature limit change has made the front and rear tires compatible with each other, and the new 18-inch construction Pirelli is compatible with the different low power levels of the 2022 F1 cars, contributing to the tire change. Behavior in heating level and efficiency.

Alfatouri’s Pierre Gasly explained: “Last year there was a lot of focus on the process and they had a different season compared to this year. In the year The presence of hotter tires on the front tires in 2021 led to more frequent locking.

Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll In 2022 with a lower working range, the front tire looks very weak, the behavior is very different and it will just take some getting used to,” he commented.
