Red Bull’s entry fee for the 2023 F1 season is equivalent to the penalty the team was hit with for breaching the spending cap earlier this year.
A Formula 1 team’s entry fee is calculated based on the number of points they score in the Constructors’ Championship. Red Bull’s 759 points lead to a £6,242,636 (£5.05 million) bill heading into the 2023 season.
“I don’t understand how much we have to pay the FIA for the points,” laughed team principal Christian Horner at the FIA Gala last week. “I got the bill the other day, it was unbelievable.”
Red Bull was fined $7 million by the FIA in October for breaching the 2021 budget cap. Such fines and entry fees are not capitalized expenditure items.
The FIA earns a total of $21.6m (£17.6m) in entry fees from the 10 teams. But the price the teams pay per point has gone up and the total points have increased, with the five teams whose points fell this year paying less than they did 12 months ago.
Eliminated champions Mercedes saw their bill drop from $1m to $3.7m. That’s more than double what the McLaren and AlphaTauri registered, totaling more than half a million dollars each.
Ferrari was the only team to see their prices increase, with Red Bull’s $2.2 million hike. Finishing second in the championship saw their entry fee increase by $1.5 million to $4 million for the following year.
