The Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers have emerged as the new trade partners for Russell Westbrook before training camp begins in September.
on tuesday, Mike Scott of Hoopshype Indiana is reportedly ready to trade Myles Turner and Buddy Hield for Westbrook, Talen Horton-Tucker and two first-round picks. The Pacers were willing to pick up Daniel Theis’ contract. Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson were traded to the Utah Jazz last week for Patrick Beverley, who spoke volumes about the Lakers’ defense and long-range shooting threat.
However, according to The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, Utah appears to be a “more likely” landing spot for Westbrook. In a recent podcast appearance, Buha reported that Indiana is offering Myles Turner and Buddy Hield.
“As far as the trade market for Westbrook, I’ve heard that Indiana and Utah are the two most likely destinations,” Buha said. “I think Utah has a better chance than Indiana from what I’ve been told. There are a lot of outlets with Indiana where Myles Turner and Buddy Hield could be either one or the other.
Although the acquisition of Hield and Turner would further alleviate the Lakers’ need for quick-fire and versatile defenders, trade talks were described as “dead” earlier this summer. Bob Kravitz. With training camp coming up, LA and Indiana could once again be involved in trade talks. Hield is averaging 15.6 points per game on 40.6 percent shooting from the field and 36.6 percent from beyond the arc.
His ability to stretch the court and Turner’s shooting abilities (33.3 percent shooting) will make Westbrook’s work easier when he’s able to find his efficiency at the rim and scan the hardwood for dunkers or shooters. Last season, Westbrook shot 44.4 percent from 29.8 percent from the field and averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.1 assists for the Lakers.
That said, Utah is heading into a rebuild after trading Rudy Gobert and making it clear they’re willing to part ways with star guard Donovan Mittel this offseason. If Mitchell is traded, Utah could have the draft capital and players to spice up the pot with a three-team deal wrapped around Westbrook and Mitchell.
The Lakers are said to be interested in helping rekindle Westbrook’s career despite the swirling trade rumors. Newly hired coach Darwin Hamm told reporters he has a “wholehearted plan” to get the best out of Brody, while Westbrook has reportedly been on the phone with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
The Lakers are hoping the hiring of Cam and the signing of younger athletic talent will help them get back into the game after a disastrous 2021-22 campaign filled with injuries and drama around the Big 3.
