The New York Knicks made a good decision to sign youngster RJ Barrett to a contract extension. With Donovan Mitchell rumored to be in the Kink jersey, how does this affect New York?
Adrian Wojnarowski breaks it down a bit:
“Sources say the Knicks have included Barrett in a trade proposal for Mitchell, which is why the process to finalize the extension took several more weeks. Barrett was at the center of a number of different trades discussed, but a combination of unexpected first-round picks and the inclusion of Kicks guard Quentin Grimes remained on Monday, sources said.
Still, the Jazz would value Barrett as part of any Mitchell deal with New York, and without him, they would be asking the Knicks to release more draft assets than they’re willing to do, sources said.
The Knicks may have to trade Quentin Grimes now.
Adrian Wojnarowski had the following to report on the situation:
“The Barrett deal — which makes the 22-year-old the youngest $100 million player in Knicks history — ends weeks of trade talks between New York and Utah for Mitchell and forces the two organizations to begin serious talks if they choose.” Various issues now due to the poison pill provision in the Barrett Agreement.
New York president of basketball operations Leon Rose has set a Monday night deadline with Utah to reach an agreement for a Mitchell trade or the Knicks will give Barrett an extension, sources said.
As the Jazz-Knicks trade talks intensified and the gap over the terms of an agreement to include Barrett in the package widened over the weekend and into Monday, sources said. Once the Knicks and Jazz completed negotiations Monday night, Rose and Duffy completed the qualifying extension for players outside of the 2019 NBA Draft.
That doesn’t mean the Knicks can’t get Donovan Mitchell.
If the Knicks were smart about this deal, they wouldn’t have traded RJ Barrett to begin with. Quentin Grimes may be the best player in this league one day, but Donovan Mitchell is a proven player in this league and it would be smart for New York to pursue him.
