“Everybody knows I’m coming for a tank,” Ryan Garcia tweeted on Wednesday, adding, “So just hang on, he knows it.” We all know.” It’s not unusual for the colorful 23-0 fighter to call out another favorite and undefeated fighter like the 27-0 Davis. But there may have been a trigger that led to the tweet in question. In an Instagram live stream Wednesday, Garcia said he and Davis butted heads. “I saw Tank in the club,” Garcia began. “He’s a tough guy.” Garcia explained the rift between him and the WBA lightweight champion.
“He was very low-key in his hoodie, and I went up to the table…and I was like, ‘Are we going to do this fight?'” Garcia said of Davis. We said. And I guess he was mad about it, everything worked out and I was like, ‘Yo, what are you doing, man? Is there no honor here? Then he replied, ‘Nah, there’s no honor here.’ The situation then turned physical, according to Garcia. “He grabbed my chain, but I wasn’t worried,” Garcia said. Garcia pointed out that Davis was simply playing a role.
“Outside the ring, you can act as hard as you want,” he said. “In the ring, everything changes… I’m not into strong acting. I’m only strong when I have to be. I don’t need to praise that.” In fact, both Garcia and Davis have proven to be strong in the ring, which is why a fight between the two men will be very interesting for fans. In the current state of the sport, however, the Davis-Garcia fight can only go down in the future. In some respects, out-of-the-ring fights have replaced superfights in the modern world of boxing.
However, it cannot be denied that Garcia has done everything possible to keep his name out there. In addition to becoming a top attraction in the fight game, the 24-year-old has a huge social media presence and has landed at least one major endorsement deal. Questions still surround Garcia and Davis. Garcia, who has yet to win a major title after all, has been criticized for not fighting Davis’ best competition. Although most would favor Davis over Garcia in the ring, there is no doubt that a matchup between the two would be a monumental event for the sport.
