“I want to fight Tank and Tank wants to fight me,” Ryan Garcia said on social media Thursday. “This is the fight that boxing needs now!” Few would argue that Garcia is wrong. After highly anticipated fights like Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua and Errol Spence-Terence Crawford fell through, fans were left with a sport that didn’t seem to have much to offer. Long story short, boxing needs a bigger fight than the bureaucracy to please the fans. It looks like Garcia is at least trying to make that a big fight. It could be the biggest fight imaginable for a battle between himself and lightweight Jervonta Davis.
“I have accepted all the terms on my side,” Garcia said on Thursday.
“And he instructed my team to do as it was presented. The fans deserve this fight. . . our sport needs this fight.” . Spence/Crawford broke up, Tank and I got into issues… This is not how boxing should be.
Garcia introduced novelty matches that have become very popular over the past several years. “With all due respect, celebrity boxing should not define our sport,” Garcia said.As for Garcia, professional boxers don’t get the treatment they deserve either. “Everyone talks about player empowerment in the NBA and other sports leagues,” he said, “but it’s time to have a real conversation about player empowerment in pro boxing.” Garcia wrapped up the thread by bringing up the fact that he himself feels he should face the popular and hard-hitting lightweight Davis.
“I need this fight for my career and, frankly, for my mental health,” said Garcia, who has been open about his emotional health challenges. “The people in charge can make this happen. Don’t let this be broken. I’m asking everyone who loves the most beautiful sport in the world.” Davis and Garcia’s reunion has been rumored for a while. The match is said to be nearing reality, but many fans will believe it when they see it. As Sean Porter recently said on his podcast: “Until you see both guys in a press conference, that’s when you know the truth.”
