Shakur Stevenson takes on Robson Concecao tonight in a twelve-round main event at the Vigilance Center in Newark, New Jersey. The fight will air live on ESPN and ESPN+ beginning at 10 p.m. ET. 18-0 Stevenson was due to defend his WBO and WBC junior lightweight titles, but was stripped of his belts yesterday when he declared he could not or would not lose the 1.6lbs needed to retain ownership of the belts. 17-1 Concecao can capture those belts if he beats Stevenson tonight.
In fact, 2016 gold medalist Concecao is no joke. His one loss was to Oscar Valdez and not everyone was comfortable thinking the judges had awarded the right man that night. As for Stevenson, he was red hot (at least yesterday), unifying the titles that were only captured last April when he beat Valdez, who handed Conceicao his only loss. Stevenson made it clear that he will be moving down to lightweight after tonight. He may be the hometown favorite (he’s from Newark, after all), but if Concecato walks out of the ring with the WBC and WBO belts this evening, it would be a great job.
