Sven Goran Eriksson reckons Man Utd need to turn their attention elsewhere after reports claim they want to sign PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo.
The Red Devils mutually agreed to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract after he criticised the club, Erik ten Hag and senior executives in a 90 minute interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo had spent most of the summer trying to secure a move away from Old Trafford after Man Utd failed to qualify for the Champions League.
And now Man Utd will be on the lookout for a new striker in the January transfer window as they look to build on their positive start under Ten Hag.
Gakpo is the main name that keeps being heavily linked but former England boss Eriksson reckons Man Utd need a centre-forward like Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
“Cody Gakpo would be very good for the Premier League and I’m certain he wouldn’t need that much time to adapt to the Premier League,” Sven told Betway.
“The thing is that many clubs will have been watching him thirty or fourty times now.
“Cristiano Ronaldo has gone now and Manchester United need an out and out number nine and Harry Kane seems the perfect fit.
“Kane could be impossible to get but they have to get something similar. Right now I don’t think Gakpo is the profile they need.”
Some reports have claimed that Man Utd have already reached an agreement to sign Gakpo in the next transfer window but the PSV forward is concentrating on adding to his three goals at the World Cup.
Asked about speculation linking him to Man Utd, Gakpo said earlier this week: “I’m focused now on the World Cup.
“It’s always nice to hear but I just focus here and do my best.
“I don’t get shy about the rumours. It’s nice things that people write, but I’m not too concerned with that.
“I’m not surprised. I know what I’m capable of but it’s always a challenge to reach your highest level possible and I think I’m not there yet. I think I can improve in a lot of things.
“It’s a team sport, it’s not about one person. I prefer it to be about the team. Right now I’m busy with the Dutch team. I’ll see what happens in the winter. In soccer, anything is possible.”
