“This fight is finally done,” Ryan Garcia tweeted Thursday afternoon. “I want it now more than anything. I’ve done the job, I’m in the prime of my career, and I know I’m going to be the greatest boxer in the world. That legacy starts today.” Davis himself took to social media Thursday. “DONE!!!!!!!!!!!” he posted on Instagram. “Tell me the locked car MF!!!!!!!!!” Like Garcia, Davis posted He posted a photo of him fighting alongside.
If this news is true – and at this point it is difficult to imagine that it will not be, one of the most anticipated matches in boxing, if not the most anticipated match, will be reduced next year. Reports are that the Davis-Garcia fight will take place next April. Las Vegas will be the obvious location, although it is not known exactly where and on what day the fight will take place. The match will be a pay-per-view.
This is much needed news for fight fans as the last several months have been brutal for the sport. First, the fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua was abandoned. Then the long-awaited Terence Crawford-Errol Spence welterweight championship bout was finalized. Of course, some were wondering if boxing’s long history of major league fights was coming to an ignominious end. The Davis-Garcia fight clearly sets that trend. It can also bring in a lot of money and eyeballs as both fighters are known for how to draw fans. Both are young, undefeated and incredibly hard hitting.
“Boxing needs this fight right now,” Garcia tweeted shortly after announcing the deal. “It’s time to return to what made this sport great for fans: beautiful fights in places like Las Vegas, grudge match stories and most importantly – fighting the best.” Credit goes to both fighters and their respective camps to make this happen. Although it’s frustrating that major fights don’t come easily, there’s no doubt that successfully preparing for promotions and broadcasts while fighting is a real challenge. The sport needed this.
