Global Athlete, an international movement led by sportspeople, has described the FIA’s new restrictions on political expression by motorsport competitors as “reasonable” and said the governing body should not restrict drivers’ human rights.
“Without athletes, there is no sport. Telling athletes to stick to their sport and stay out of politics is utter hypocrisy, Global Athlete CEO Rob Koehler told RaceFans.
“Freedom of expression is a basic human right and the rules of sports cannot replace human rights. Many people see athletes as agents of change. The example set by the FIA is that every child, youth and adult involved in the sport should remain silent on issues of social justice. It is simply wrong. Shame on the FIA. Athletes are people first, athletes second.
“Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of expression.’ This right includes freedom of expression without interference. Sports rules should not have the ability to limit that right. What’s next, take away drivers’ right to choose? It is absolute nonsense.”
Soccer’s international governing body, FIFA, and the Olympic Committee have previously moved to limit political activity during events by competitors. Koehler said he believes “drivers will do the same” as the Olympic athletes who took the stand that led to the loosening of such rules.
Schumacher and Vettel meet for RoC
Mick Schumacher has been announced as the final entry for the 2023 championship, meaning he will once again line up Germany for the event’s Nations Cup alongside Sebastian Vettel.

IndyCar will disappear from iRacing
The existence of the yet-to-be-developed IndyCar video game from Motorsports Games and the exclusive contract signed with the series meant that the iRacing simulator software platform lost its license to use IndyCar content.
Every IndyCar evolution Dallara chassis has been made available on the software and 12 of the 16 circuits featured on the 2022 calendar can be contested. The current-spec car will still be used in iRacing, but all IndyCar-branded content will be removed and Esports races using Indy Cars or Indy Lite cars will not be allowed to stream online.
IndyCar previously hosted the IndyCar iRacing Challenge, an IndyCar-sanctioned esports series in 2020 and 2021, and iRacing also hosts the Official Virtual Indianapolis 500 and the IndyCar Official Esports Series.
