The Miami Heat hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder last night in a primetime matchup on TNT. The Thunder went back-and-forth as the Miami Heat tried to wipe out a first-half lead. Some fourth quarter heroics from Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat were enough for the Heat to escape with a close win last night, setting an NBA record.
Last night as a team, the Heat went a perfect 40-40 from the free throw line to set a new NBA record. Miami was missing four key starters last night, but their role players stepped up to help the Teacup come away with a narrow win over the Thunder. Josh Giddy’s triple-double wasn’t enough to stop Jimmy Butler and the Heat.

The Miami Heat set a new NBA record 40-40 from the free throw line against OKC on Tuesday.
With 12.9 seconds left in the game, Jimmy Butler made the layup. He will have a chance to set a new NBA record for most free throws made in a game without missing a regular season game. Butler took the last free throw and you could see he wasn’t sure going in. The shot was perfect and would end a historic night for the Miami Heat.
The previous record for regular season goals was as follows.
- 12/7/1982 Utah Jazz 39-39 from the free throw line
- 4/12/1990 Boston Celtics 35-35 from the free throw line
- 4/11/1991 Golden State Warriors 33-33 from the free throw line
- 3/18/1990 Boston Celtics 33-33 from the free throw line
- 2/8/2009 Phoenix Suns 32-32 from the free throw line
Miami’s longtime head coach Erik Spoelstra commented on his team’s record-setting performance on Tuesday.
“It’s a typical Tuesday night for the Miami Heat,”… “I think that’s when we feel the most alive, when everything is happening and all our competitive juices are out there. That’s the group we all relate to. “It’s my favorite team,” he said. – Erik Spoelstra
Bam Adebayo, Kyle Lowry, Tyler Hero and Caleb Martin did not play for the Miami Heat last night due to injuries. Jimmy Butler had no problem stepping up and becoming the anchor the team needed. He had a historic night himself as he went 23-23 from the free throw line and nailed his final attempt for the game-winner. James Harden and Dirk Nowitzki are tied at 24-24 for the single-game scoreless streak.

It was a total team effort last night and it took everything they had to get the win. All OKC head coach Mark Dynelt can do is give credit to Miami for a great game. The Heat trailed 111-106 with less than a minute and thirty seconds left before scoring the final six points for a 112-111 win.
