“There is no reason” not to expand F1 to 12 teams – Ben Suleiman
FIA president Mohamed Ben Sulaiman said there was “no reason” why the F1 grid could not be stretched to 12, given Andretti and Cadillac’s desire to join Formula 1.
At a press conference at the Dakar Rally, Ben Sulaiman said the governing body would be open to approving any team deemed good enough to enter F1, “however small”.
“In general, if we look at the sustainability of Formula 1, we have to open it up to other brands. We can have up to 12 teams on the grid,” said Ben Suleiman.
“OEM – it helps to make Formula 1 better and I see no reason to accept new teams, especially American ones. We have three races this year. We welcome any proposal to be one of the 12 teams. We accept good teams, even if they are small, like Hass. Hopefully things will change and we’ll have a proper eleven, we’ll see what happens.
Colapinto joined the Williams Jr. program.
FIA Formula 3 racer Franco Colapinto has signed up for the Williams Driver Academy to become the F1 team’s new junior driver.
The 19-year-old will compete with MP Motorsport in his second season of the main F3 championship this year. Colapinto took two wins and five podiums in last year’s championship to finish ninth overall.
“Joining Williams Racing as an academy driver is a true honor,” said Colapinto. “They are one of the most successful teams in Formula 1 history and I look forward to following in the footsteps of my compatriot Carlos Reutemann.
“My first year in FIA F3 was a learning experience and I will use the knowledge I have gathered to improve next year.”
F1 manager 2022 sales ‘below expectations’
Shares in F1 manager 2022 developer Frontier Developments fell 42 percent after revenue forecasts for 2023 and 2024 were cut.
Frontier released the first installment in the F1 Manager franchise last year, but F1 Manager 2022 saw “lower than expected sales” as well as underperformance by the company’s other titles and its own publishing label.
The developer has a three-game contract for the officially licensed F1 management game. The second title is expected to be released in the middle of this season.
