Formula 1 has announced the five teams that will field the cars in the new F1 Academy Women’s Championship.
The Formula 4 series is managed by Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel and his series teams are selected. Art Grand Prix, Campos Racing, Carlin, MP Motorsport and Prima are the five, each running three cars.
ART GP was founded by outgoing Alfa Romeo team principal Frédéric Vasseur and Campos’ legendary founder Adrian Campos, who competed in F1 in the 1980s, so there are direct F1 links to the two teams.
All five teams had great success in the junior single-seater competition. Since 2017, ART GP has run two of the F2 championships, Prima has run three, MP won the driver’s and team’s titles this year and Carlin won the teams’ title in 2018. Campos won the title when the series was formerly known as GP2.
The five teams have committed to participating in the series’ first three-year cycle, Michel said. “We know them very well and have been cooperating with each of them for many years,” he said.
“They are well known for their experience and expertise in nurturing and developing young drivers. I am confident that drivers competing in the F1 Academy will provide key technical development and physical and mental preparation for the journey ahead.
Although the F1 Academy calendar won’t be announced until next year, the format has already been decided, with three races each over seven rounds and an additional 15 test days for the competitors. The drivers’ signatures will also be revealed in 2023. The participating teams have now been officially decided.
Tatus’ second-generation F4 car, with engines from Abarth and tires from Pirelli, will form the basis of the series, with running costs subsidized by F1.
