Tottenham Hotspur have been warned against giving Antonio Conte money to spend in January if he does not extend his contract in the near future.
It is now just over a year since Conte replaced Nuno Espirito Santo at Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs have fared brilliantly under the ex-Chelsea boss overall. He guided them to the top-four last season and they have now qualified for the last-16 stage of the Champions League.
They still have a way to go if they are going to win trophies on a regular basis, though.
The Londoners have been found out when they have played against the top side in the Premier League as they have been beaten by Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United.
Conte has been backed as the club have spent big in each of the two last transfer windows.
But he is yet to commit his future to the club and his current contract is due to expire next summer.
Tottenham currently sit fourth in the Premier League but Tim Sherwood thinks Conte will leave if they do not win a trophy this season.
“I think it’s a huge opportunity for Antonio Conte but only if they’re going to spend an awful lot of money,” Sherwood told talkSPORT.
“It’s very difficult to win the Premier League we know because Manchester City are so good and they bought [Erling] Haaland which takes them even further away.
“There’s a lot of clubs struggling. We talk about top four, I think that top four would be a huge success for Tottenham. Because Liverpool are out of it, Manchester United are out of it, Chelsea are out of it.
“I think that it’s a really difficult season for them. Conte keeps talking about the project and how he needs patience but he hasn’t signed a new contract.
“I’d suggest signing the contract and then talking about patience and calming everyone down. I think that if he doesn’t win a trophy this year then he’ll leave, I really do.”
Sherwood has also suggested that Daniel Levy should ensure that Conte is staying before he is given more money to spend.
“If I’m chairman Daniel Levy I’m not giving him any money until he commits to the club,” Sherwood added.
“Why would I buy players to fit the Antonio Conte style if I’m going to bring in another manager with different ideas?
“I think that this group of players are very good, he just needs to trust them a lot more. You can’t just wait until you’re 2-0 down to start playing.
“He keeps talking about how good Liverpool are but Liverpool beat no one away from home this season [until Sunday], so they’re not fantastic and I thought he missed a trick.”
