With a fight against WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk probably out of the question for this year, unretired WBC and lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has finally decided that he wants to fight Anthony Joshua in the all-clear. British super fight. Speaking on social media on Monday, Fury addressed Joshua directly.
“I think you’ve all heard that I’m going to fight soon in the next few months,” Fury said, “and I think I’m going to do it before I know the opponent: Anthony Joshua.” I know that you lost the fight against Usyk and are currently beltless and I would like to give you a chance to fight for the WBC Heavyweight Championship and the next few lines. months. You’re coming off a twelve-round fight, so you’re very fit, you’re ready. I’ll give you a few months notice. If you’re interested, I’ll send you the date and we’ll chat. Battle of Britain for the WBC World Heavyweight Championship. Let me know if you are interested. If not, I will choose another opponent. Thank you very much and good evening. Boom.”
Fury knocked out Dillian Height last April, then decided to announce his retirement. His retirement didn’t seem to last long. Fury has expressed his desire to face Usyk this year, once Usyk defeated Joshua in a rematch a few weeks ago. According to Fury, however, Usyk has made it clear that he is very close to getting into the ring with him this year. The Explosive Fury now seeks another opponent. He and Joshua were supposed to meet in 2021, but the battle broke up. That fight, if it happened, would be for the World Heavyweight Championship.
If Joshua chooses to accept Fury’s offer, it might not be an undisputed championship fight, but it would make for an exciting and big matchup, especially in England, where both fighters are from. In reality, however, it is unlikely that Joshua will be willing to face Fury this year. After losing to Usyk for the second time last month, he had something to digest and was coming off a grueling mega bout that saw him without one of his titles and a third loss on his resume. In other words, the legendary Joshua may need some time to bounce back. There is no doubt that the man can still bring in a lot of dollars and eyeballs when he decides to return to the ring.
