In the year WBC and reigning heavyweight champion Tyson Fury says he still wants to face former world champion Anthony Joshua despite hopes of a late 2022 fight with Anthony Joshua falling apart before anyone can sign a contract. Even if Joshua doesn’t hold the title belts, a match between the two has been on the horizon for a long time, much to the dismay of fans.
“We’ve been trying to make that fight for years,” Fury said. “It’s a fight that people want to see. As a boxing fan, it’s the fight I want to see.” Along with former world title legend Deontay Wilder, Fury and Joshua represent the new heavyweight brand after the Wladimir Klitschko era. Even though they were as big and massive as Klitschko, they also had a fan following outside of continental Europe. In other words, unlike Klitschko, this new breed of heavyweight has excited people worldwide. Fury went on to beat American Wilder two out of three. But he and Joshua have never met in the ring.
“For the last four or five years, it’s been this three-headed monster: me, Winder, Joshua,” Fury said. But time is running out and Fury wants to settle the question of who was the greatest warrior of the three before it’s too late. Although Oleksandr Usyk won the IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles from Joshua before successfully defending them in a rematch last summer, Fury still feels the Joshua matchup is fixed. “Joshua and Wilder were killed, and I’m the one who stood up,” Fury said. All of a sudden, now some new people have arrived – Joe Joyce, Daniel DuBois, Usyk’s door party has crashed.
Fury, the biggest name in the heavyweight division, now admits that people are interested to see how he fares against this new heavyweight contender. “There’s a load of new blood now that wasn’t there five years ago, and it’s like, ‘Can you beat this guy?’ It seems to say.” Still, Fury feels there is unfinished business to be done with the celebrity. Joshua, my countryman and peer. “If Joshua and I don’t fight in this day and age, I think it’s an absolutely deadly trick,” he said.
