Make no mistake about it – Derek Chisora is game and a respectable fighter. But even veterans like Chisora can only take so much punishment. And the penalty is what the Englishman received in London on Saturday. Chisora took a real beating from his friend and rival when he defeated WBC and heavyweight champion Tyson Fury for the third time. As Chisora continued to fight, there was a point in the game where the man had no chance. The referee wisely stopped the fight in the 10th round. The official didn’t make the right call, no one in his right mind would argue.
“First of all, thank you my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” Fury said in a post-fight interview before 60,000 people turned out to see the “King of the GSP” in action. “I felt good. I needed some rounds.” Fury said before praising his opponent. “He’s the perfect fighter, and it’s been a privilege to fight him three times. He’s an absolute hero of the English people. Fury led the crowd in praising Chisora, admitting he’s a beaten man himself. Thanks to the ref,” he said. You don’t want to stop fighting.”
Fury, who is not yet ready to leave the ring, calls out IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. He then proceeds to bombard the man with obscenities to convince him of an undeniable championship fight between himself and the Ukrainian master. Joe Joyce, himself a red hot heavyweight, stepped up and offered himself a fight. Fury says that if Usyk doesn’t want any action, he’ll gladly do it. Usyk, it should be noted, appeared completely unprepared.
Fury went on to say that he may need surgery before he can fight again, so a fight for the undisputed championship could be some way off, even if he is targeting next year’s premier class. Old foe Deontay Wilder’s name also came up, with Fury welcoming the idea of fighting the American hard for a fourth time. “The man will soon be hard to beat.” Retired great Andre Ward of the ESPN+ broadcast team spoke about Fury. He was right, as it may have been anger that defined this era of heavyweight boxing.
