Vettel wants Verstappen to get 16 wins
Max Verstappen scored his 14th win of the season on Sunday. Verstappen, who already held the record, congratulated himself and said he hoped the world champion could add two more before the end of the season.
“Well done,” Vettel said. “I think he’s had a hell of a time, so hopefully he’ll be 16 by the end of the year. Everything else would be disappointing, wouldn’t it? “
While Verstappen and Red Bull dominated throughout the year, Vettel pointed out that they won races when their car was less competitive. “Obviously they’ve got momentum from last year, the car this year is unbelievable. They’ve won races despite being heavier than anyone else. I think they’ve probably put the weight out at the moment so the car is there but Max is doing an amazing job.
Vettel drove for Red Bull between 2009 and 2014 and last weekend wore a helmet in honor of company founder Dietrich Matschitz. Good for the team for their success this year, I’m glad I still know some of the people there.
Perez has targeted race speed improvements in 2023
Sergio Perez says he needs to change his focus next year to improve his race pace. The Red Bull driver has won twice this year, but his teammate has dozens more.
“I think you know this year was a good year as a team. [but] Mainly I need to pick up my racing speed a bit. I think that’s where he qualified last year.
“You can run a lot with these cars, so I think we need to develop that sprint. The understanding with the team, with the car, I think that has come better in the last few races. So I believe we are moving in the right direction.
Szafnauer urged Gasly to take care.
Pierre Gasly “needs to be a bit more careful” to ensure he doesn’t collect a race ban, said Alpine team principal Ottmar Schaffnauer. Gasly took his tenth Superlicence point in Mexico, moving him two clear of an automatic ban after sending Lance Stroll off the track.
Gasly will retain these points until he makes his debut for Alpine at the start of next season. Szafnauer said: “I saw what happened today and I’m not biased this time, it seemed 50-50 to me. But he should be more careful.
Pourchaire Alfa Romeo got a reserve role
Theo Porcheir, who made his first race at Alfa Romeo’s official F1 practice in Austin last month, will become the team’s reserve driver next year. Purcher is second in the Formula 2 standings with one round to go, although the championship has already been won by Felipe Dragovic.
