Budget cap needs ‘another couple of years’ to create ‘exciting competition’ – Brown
McLaren chief executive Zak Brown believes it will “probably take another two years” before Formula 1’s budget cap system brings teams closer together and boosts competition.
In an interview posted by the team on social media, Brown said teams with less sophisticated resources will need a few years to build facilities before they can compete with larger teams. Asked if he sees himself closing the field, Brown said, “I think another couple of years.
“I think even though we’re all spending the same amount now, some teams have a bigger infrastructure,” he explained.
“We’re still waiting for our wind tunnel, which is just down the road, which will be here soon – a new simulator. So everybody’s kind of on a level playing field or most teams in terms of annual spending, quite a few teams have come in with better technology infrastructure, we’re catching up and there are other teams.
“So I think when these rules are settled, people will participate. I think it will be a very good race in a few years.
